The Missing Renewable Technology
The unpredictable and intermittent nature of certain renewable energy sources such as wind and solar is perhaps the greatest technological problem facing the emerging renewable energy industry in its attempt to position itself as base load generation. Put simply, these forms of renewables are not despatchable. No matter how efficient the generator, electricity production stops when the wind drops or the sun goes down. The renewable industry requires large-scale electricity storage systems so that it may be stored when in surplus and delivered later as required. Perhaps more importantly, it would also allow generators to deliver consistent supplies, in line with consumer expectations. The current options for large-scale electricity storage are restricted and have some severe limitations. Pumping water between reservoirs at different heights and the storage of compressed air underground are reliant on suitable geology. Such solutions are expensive and invasive, and are not quick to react to demand. CBD Energy with its wholly owned subsidiary RAPS has addressed the issue of large scale energy storage with the development of a thermal energy storage system that addresses the need for storage as well as providing a modular system that allows for storage optimisation to the application.
